The Location
The first time I drove up the hill and saw the lot at 14 Sugar Maple Drive I knew it would be the perfect place to build the perfect home . . .  a center of peace and serenity surrounded by whispering trees, cheerful birds, and the fresh mountain air.  With a gorgeous view of Mt. Pisgah, it was an ideal location in other ways as well: halfway between historic Asheville and Hendersonville and their upscale shopping, farmers markets, orchards, art galleries and large retail. And the dining in the area is incredible too – so many options, so many different cuisines, from friendly local BBQ to fine dining with elegant steaks and fresh river trout.
Because of the mild climate, you can find a festival any time of the year. One I’ve come to love is the Taste of Greenville, just an hour away in South Carolina, with 47 restaurants showing their best and competing for your vote. Then there’s the live music, from classical to blue grass, all just minutes away.  The Brevard and Flat Rock theaters are known for their performances.

The history here in the mountains will take you a lifetime to investigate, from the geology to the original Indians to the settlers, the artists, the builders, the dreamers.  There are several universities and colleges within an hour’s drive including the University of North Carolina, western branch.  Minutes away is the Asheville Botanical Gardens which welcomes volunteers and offer classes on maintaining your garden and the types of trees and shrubs that grow best in a mountain environment.  Sugar Maple Drive is just minutes from the Asheville Regional Airport and little over an hour’s drive from the Spartanburg/Greenville Airport so it’s always easy to get around town, or get out of town for a spell.

High Vista is a secure, gated community with a challenging 18-hole golf course, a community pool and tennis courts, plus a restaurant and bar in a very comfortable club house.  All residents of High Vista are invited to become members.

The House
Walk through the leaded glass front door into the entry from the covered drive and turn into an open plan living and dining area with a stunning 31-foot ceiling, large stone gas-lit fireplace and custom oak cabinet concealing a 52-inch TV.   The widows reach to the ceiling, where an incredible double fan silently circulates the air.  Notice the long panels that run along the ceiling, concealing indirect lighting that fills the ceiling and the room with soft light.  Open either set of double sliding glass doors and step out onto a wraparound deck that will lead you to a huge screened porch, just off the kitchen, with access doors to both the kitchen and dining area.  Wherever you look you will be surrounded by the mountain forest; below, the mountain’s dramatic drop lets you see above the tree line in several places.

This unique custom-built home has everything a woman wants in a house.  The dream kitchen has a double stainless steel sink with a garbage disposal, a silent dishwasher, and best of all, a sweeping yet private view of nature outside.  Stainless gas/electric convection oven stove with all the bells and whistles  with a stylish stainless hood, a stainless French door refrigerator; all wrapped around a large butcher block island.  Quarter-sawn oak cabinets abound, offering storage everywhere including lit leaded glass corner cabinets above lazy Susan trays. Granite countertops on every surface including a wet bar which opens onto the dining area.  The kitchen is a pleasure to work in, each step cushioned by wonderful cork floors.  Across from the kitchen is a convenient walk-in pantry which also contains the home’s central vacuum tools. The vacuum system has outlets throughout the house and garage.

Just past the pantry, note the width of the halls and doorways and stylish lever door handles on every door for greater accessibility and handicap-friendliness.  By the door just past the pantry you will see a button on the wall, push it and open the door and pull the accordion door back.  Surprise . . .  an elevator accessing all (3) floors, large enough to carry a wheelchair and two adults.

But before you go to another level, walk down the hall, on your left there is a huge laundry room with ample storage space and a large folding bench, plus a door to the outside so muddy gardening clothes don’t have to come through the house. Across the hall is the guest powder room with a custom solid mahogany vanity with a fun sink and spigot.  At the end of the hall open a door to the spacious master bedroom with a spacious walk-in closet and a unique ceiling fan.  Then enter the master bath, tiled from ceiling to heated tile floor, with dual sinks set in a granite counter top, a Jacuzzi tub, and a walk in shower with a variety of different shower heads;     rain, wall and handheld or all (3) at once . . . a true Roman bath.

Then take the elevator or climb the open staircase from the great room to find a large loft, softly lit by two skylights that would make it an ideal office, reading area or library with an incredible view.  To the side is a small bedroom or office with a leaded glass door which opens onto a balcony over the front door.  While upstairs, note all of the little doors along the outside walls that open to thoughtful additional storage space.

You will find two more carpeted bedrooms with ceiling fans, a walk-in closet and a large bathroom with a separate tiled shower stall and a tiled bathtub/shower combo, plus a custom vanity.  It also features a medicine closet and handy laundry chute to the main floor laundry room.  There is one more door to open in the hall; you will see a winding wooden staircase going up to another surprise, an area that can be finished into a teen’s bedroom sanctuary or an artist’s studio, the attic.  Here also is the high-efficiency air exchange unit which can replace the home’s existing air with fresh outside air in just 5 minutes.  It’s great after cooking bacon!  It is also capable of circulating the air in the entire house, economically regulating heating and cooling.

Back to the elevator, push 1, this brings you to the downstairs floor with a generous (3) car garage to your right, but that’s not all.  One of the garage bays can accommodate a small truck.  Turn left and you will find a separate huge family or recreation area, just waiting for your finishing ideas.  There is also another full bath and bedroom.  This area could be easily transformed into a very comfortable in-law suite, a home theater, a man-cave, or any other inspiration that strikes you.  Note the large sliding glass doors which go out onto another wrap around this deck with stairs that go to the upper deck.  As elsewhere, there are many closets, nooks, and crannies for storage.  At the end of the large open area there is a door that leads you to a utility room door and an open staircase leading up to the main floor living room.

This is a dream home for entertaining small or large groups with its open floor plan; it has enough variety of bedrooms to accommodate guests or a large family.  The entire home is especially easy to care for with white oak hardwood floors throughout.  It is surrounded by incredible natural views; how much fun you will have the first time you realize you are in the clouds until they pass, or the first time a wild turkey or a doe and her fawn walk by, or you spend your first fall here and witness the incredible colors and you can hear the cardinals sing out his cheery greeting.  It doesn’t get much better than that.

The things I love about East Asheville are the quiet evenings away from the Hustle and Bustle of Downtown Asheville. East Asheville, in my opinion, is more relaxing than other parts of Asheville, there is less traffic, you can easily feel like you are miles away yet all your shopping is so close by. We also have quick, easy access to the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Swannanoa River and the Mall!

We love to go out to eat and we have many great restaurants in East Asheville, Latin Flavor cafe is 5 minutes from the house they have excellent food and a very classy atmosphere. Pomodoro's - Greek and Italian is just a couple of miles away, they have great Pizzas. East Village Grille is great to enjoy socializing and they have great burgers. Filo is convenient to meet a friend from coffee and desert. Tunnel Rd is not far away and we enjoy going to Pappas and Beer. Downtown Asheville is 15 minutes away and there are numerous restaurants for the foodies, Curate, Table, Stratta Italian, Chestnut, etc...you will love the food in Asheville.

Grocery stores are plentiful, Whole Foods will be opening on South Tunnel Rd. Ingles is 5 minutes away. Trader Joe's and Harris Teeter is 15 minutes away.

This home is a great investment in a well established mountain community, the location is secluded yet extremely convenient. It is exactly what we would call the perfect Asheville home. The Asheville area is ideal for those who enjoy the beauty of nature. You do not have to be an extreme sport lover to enjoy the beauty of these mountains, with greenways and river parks, this area lends itself to folks from all walks of life. A true community where you can blend in and find yourself.

A few other things we can mention. . .the house is great for entertaining, cook a great meal while watching a game with friends, or enjoy gatherings on the huge deck. The floor plan is great and there is a ton of storage in the house.

The Swannanoa river is a state stocked river and the portion of the river by the river park is private, if you enjoy fly fishing, you have your own river right in your "back-yard" you don't have to drive anywhere to enjoy a little time by the waters. If you love to be active, there are activities that will keep you busy, hiking, rafting, mountain biking or simply enjoy a Sunday drive stopping at an overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway with your book and a picnic basket. We also enjoy going Downtown for some very entertaining people watching.

Our neighborhood is great. You will never know this neighborhood even exists unless you take the turn and drive along the river to find this private, well established mountain community. It is a rather large community but the location of our home is the best in the neighborhood, you don't have to drive through the entire community to get to the house. Our street is great to walk the dogs or play in the road, the only cars that drive down our road are the neighbors who live there. We have gorgeous sunset views in the winter and it is super private in the summer when the leaves fill the trees. We have fantastic social events in our community, such as hiking, picnics down by the river park, dinner nights at the Latin Flavor Cafe or cookie exchange parties over the holidays.

We had the gas on a budget plan, we filled the tank and paid $100 per month and the tank lasted us about 12 months. Electricity was at its lowest about $100 per month, another great thing about this home, if you keep the upstairs windows open, the air flows through naturally and you don't need to turn on the air conditioner! At its highest $225. Water bill was about $40 per month with 2 people living in the home.
