I like to cook and love my kitchen! Next in line would be; the Glass Onion in Weaverville or the Knife and Fork in Spruce Pine… each are stellar places to eat! Burnsville has some cute and fine little cafe's and restaurants like; the Garden Deli and Appalachian Java ~ a former favorite of mine was MaryJane's Cafe which is now Kirkwoods and is a pretty darned good place to find all my favorite locals :) and I love their back deck dining option and live music.
I think Burnsville has one of the best Ingles I've ever been in ~ I think it must be because our organic voices are loud :) but I usually shop a hop skip and a jump at the Westgate Earth Fare in Asheville. Burnsville has a really good farmer's market on Saturday.
When we bought the property we were immediately drawn to the gingerbread and lacework on the outside and the fine craftsmanship of the woodworking inside ~ the proximity to Asheville and the location was perfect! Even though the house needed so much work when we were shown it, we saw the pure potential of it and knew in our hearts we would be the next caretakers of this fine, well built and important historic landmarks of the region. We knew we could live and work in this awesome place, no problem!
Asheville and WNC has some of the most forward thinking and progressive souls we know. There is something about this region that is a breeding ground for creativity, music and loving spirit to blossom. There are some of the best buskers in Asheville, a really good drum circle on Friday nights and some of the best eateries I've encountered I'm a 'foodie'!). And that the region is a temperate rainforest ~ the most bio-diverse region on the planet next to the tropical rain forests, I'm told! More flora and fauna than most places… The mountain ranges are some of the oldest on the planet… There are many geological wonders here ~ you can find emeralds, rubies, mica, amethyst and quartz crystals a plenty are some of the gems found. And again ~ some of the most spectacular landscapes ~ those blue ridges are not photoshopped ~ they exist! I love hiking and finding waterfalls and scenic views and having my breath taken away on a regular basis by mother nature. Some other things I can mention are… I love being able to see the Milky Way on a dark night… I love my valley view… I love how the landscaping we installed more than 10 years ago has so beautifully matured and is hugging the property as a nice buffer from the highway… Looking out almost any window is a nice view… That you can't hear the highway from most places inside the house… Did I mention that the taxes are low??? :)
This is a great place for a party! There are so many things you can do with this well built, historic home with 4 footprints dating back to 1839; so well sewn together and updated many times over the years… It was made into virtually a 'new home' in vintage clothes in 1990 when it was lifted and new foundation, all new electric and septic and well were installed… All the wood and metal inside and out were stripped and restored… the newest sunroom addition is my favorite to work in with such gorgeous natural light and good views… inspirational place to live… with 'good bones'.
You can find hiking, sightseeing, fishing, tubing, zip lining, shopping, people watching, fine dining, back country cafe's & grocery stores, live music, photo-ops, bookstores, literary people, artistic souls, and just generally happy people here!
Our neighborhood is great for having cows as our closest neighbors and artists right around the corner & beauty right in front of me every day out my window and nearly wherever I drive ~ the proximity to Asheville coupled with low taxes and breathtaking beauty of the landscapes everywhere you go ~ and how many kind~souled and sweet~hearted people you run across. Instead there is a mom and pop pizzeria place, coffee shop, and diner called the Local Joint. The grocery store in Fairview is Food Lion with a small organic store, Trout Lily, across the street. But for the best groceries you want to go to one of the many convenient Ingles in Asheville, Arden, or Fletcher. If you've never shopped at an Ingles you are in for treat, with its organic produce and meats. We were drawn to our property by the gorgeous drive; with horses and picturesque barns all along the way, it truly brings a sense of well being to arrive on our mountaintop. The Asheville area is great for its outdoor fun in the daytime and its nightlife of music and fine dining. There are so many things to do: hiking on the parkway, tubing down the French Broad river, taking a tour of the many breweries here, or walking through the river arts district. Lake Lure is only 20 minutes away from our house with it's breathtaking views of a lake surrounded by mountains and its bottomless pools. Of course, Biltmore estate is beautiful and worth visiting in all four seasons. And driving around in the Asheville area, you will see an abundance of waterfalls that simply take your breath away. Asheville has been named one of the prettiest places in America! There are several other unique things about Asheville. It is a dog friendly city. It is a great place to live if you are a vegetarian with every menu here giving you many options to chose from. The music scene is phenomenal. Musicians who normally go to large cities with their large venues come to the small quaint city of Asheville. It seems to be a magnet for musicians and artisans alike.
Of course, we are all different but Asheville has something for everyone. With our house less than 20 minutes from the Blue Ridge Parkway, you can go for a drive and stop at the many overlooks and take a picnic with you. Or you can take the kids to the nature center, rock museum, or for a ride on a zip line. There is a skateboard park downtown and also a water fountain kids love. There are so many fun festivals here. Beer festivals, music festivals, and apple festivals in the fall. Asheville is definitely a place where you can live life to its fullest. Our neighborhood in Fairview is quiet and secluded with only a few neighbors."

I'm probably a grocery store snob! I humbly apologize about this...I go to Ingles on Russ Avenue almost exclusively. I've never brought home food that's out of date or not fresh! I purchase ice, movies, wine, newspapers, and many other items usually found at a larger store. Who can complain about Starbucks being INSIDE???
We take our vehicles to Taylor Ford for everything from oil changes to major repairs. Their service department is the best we've ever found. They are honest and quick to make repairs and get parts when needed. VERY dependable.
When we purchased our home, I was surprised at the floor and closet space! Plenty of room for our family to spread out and have "their own space". From the outside it is VERY deceiving. We looked for 2 years and couldn't find a place that fit our needs and when I walked into the front door I said: "This is it!". My husband and our Realtor wanted to know how I could tell from the front door, since there were many changes to be made, but I just knew. The next day I had a relative go back with me to look at the house because we were all so shocked! I still love our home! (and the yard is low maintenance, too!).
Convenience is a real plus in Waynesville. There is an entrance to the Blue Ridge Parkway only a few miles from our home, Barber's Orchard is open August through December, WCU is a great place for dozens of activities during the year, Great Smoky Mountain Railroad has fun opportunities for all ages, Biltmore is changing all the time and their Ambassador Pass holds endless benefits. Asheville is great for eating and shopping. I go regularly to the Arboretum and use the Trolly Tour for guests several times a year. I want to add the health care system in Asheville is one of the best in the entire STATE.
I must mention the friendliness of the general population in Waynesville. From being animal friendly, to shopkeepers, and we rarely miss going to church. We love our friends we've made here!! I support our merchants in Haywood County almost exclusively. You can't beat Mast General Store, Belk and the Tool Shed for clothing and gifts. Downtown Waynesville and Downtown Hazelwood have several shops unique to our area.
Waynesville is quite a festive area!! All the craft shows, street dances and Friday night shopping can't be beat. Folkmoot brings a cultural atmosphere that can't be found in other small counties in NC for three weeks in the summer. It is always changing and every year I learn something new. The Farmer's Markets are other favorites. I frequent both. Where else can you find fresh seafood, veggies, bakery items, homemade soap and hand knitted sweaters, scarves and caps?
My husband loves to fly fish. He says the fly fishing is the best in the Eastern US right here in Haywood County! He should know! Regularly I walk around the lake at Junaluska. I love the roses in the summertime. There are two beautiful golf courses within a few miles of our home. Everyone in the family plays golf but me. We eat at both golf resorts when the guys play... I go to the Blue Ridge Parkway whenever I can. Hiking the Blue Ridge is my worn out handbook of endless short and long hikes...I never tire of this!
Our neighborhood is very small. Almost half the homeowners are from out of state but even at times when we're all here it is friendly and very quiet! I love my huge porch with many rocking chairs and little hanging votives. Even in the winter we sit out with blankets and quilts and a hot cup of cocoa or coffee--a perfect place to unwind.
