The things we love about Fairview include the great feel of country living--but downtown Asheville is just 12 minutes away. Mountains and pastures and streams join together for lovely views, seeming to shift daily as the seasons change. Within a five-mile mile radius you can find horseback riding, a County library, a running track, a Par-course and a municipal swimming pool. One mile more takes you to the Blue Ridge Parkway
We love to eat at the Local Joint, one of Buncombe county's undiscovered culinary delights. A few miles up the road Nachos & Beer serves up authentic Tex-Mex dishes, and Piazza offers a full menu of gourmet pizzas. Just down the road, the Mountain Mojo coffee house serves a mean Cappuccino and a variety of delicious pastries. It opened this spring and is a popular gathering place for the community.
The local Food Lion and Ingles meet our everyday needs. We're also lucky to have Trout Lily for organic items and fresh-baked bread. In the warm months, vegetable stands dot Charlotte Highway, while nearby providers serve the most discerning locavores. These include Hickory Nut Gap Farm, Flying Cloud Farm, Looking Glass Creamery, and the Cane Creek Farm CSA. Locals line up on the weekends for fresh fish from the North Carolina Seafood Company.
The Happy Tails Country Club will be delighted to entertain your dogs for a day or a month.
When we bought the property we were drawn to the bright interior and the unique floor plan. The first-floor cathedral ceiling and the spacious open plan are wonderful, and the second-floor loft makes an ideal study and library. The house is nestled among a tall stand of oaks and pines, with just enough greenery to permit great views of of the Swanannoa Mountains, yet give a real sense of privacy.
Asheville blends the best of southern living with a sophistication unusual for its size and location. The spirit of Thomas Wolfe, O Henry and Zelda Fitzgerald still haunt the plethora of independent bookstores.
Asheville offers the best of high culture, fascinating architecture, yet maintains authentic roots in its Appalachian heritage. Asheville restaurants can compete with New York; the music scene with Nashville; craft brewers with Portland; and the occasional (and delightful) weird vibe with Austin. Asheville is a model of urban and suburban diversity. Multimillion dollar homes sit cheek-by-jowl with doublewides. Every neighborhood seems different, whether peppered with arts-and-craft jewel boxes or sprawling McMansions. The people are equally diverse; a variety of heritages, ethnicities and political persuasions blend in good-natured harmony.
Have we mentioned the weather? As the rest of the country seems beset with extremes, Asheville seems to be settling in a Goldilocks pattern: delightfully cool summers and mild winters, with just enough rain to keep everything lush and emerald-green. Autumn is our favorite season, long and languorous, the evenings warm, the changing leaves bathed in golden light.
We enjoy volunteering. Mary is on the board of Habitat for Humanity, and every Tuesday can be found hammering nails on a Habitat job site. In her spare time she makes quilts and takes advantage of all the local craft and fabric shops. John writes unpublishable novels. Every two years we get out and stump for a candidate or three. We're both great readers, and let our two mutts run our lives most of the time.
Our neighborhood is a perfect mix of young and old, children and grown-ups. Laurel Woods is just 14 houses on spacious lots--close enough for neighbors to build lasting friendships, but distant enough for solitude when we want it. It's great for jogging and leisurely walks, pet friendly, quiet and green. Fairview Elementary and Cane Creek Middle School are just minutes away.
