"Seller Says"
We moved to the Asheville area in 1988 due to job transfer opportunities. We chose the Asheville area due to the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains where we could watch the seasonal changes, great climate, and a smaller diverse town. After seeing several small homes, the realtor said he had one more to show us but we may not like it. He was wrong! A two-story home with a sunken living room, a large master bedroom, and a major plus was the walk in closets in both upstairs bedrooms, two in the master. The house was just perfect for all our large furniture. Our six year old daughter was happy because her only wish was a “doorbell!” We had no idea what community we were in at the time, but Oakley for us, turned out to be the best location to live in Asheville and convenient to so many things.
Oakley is a community of settled and new homes, situated off Exit 53 in Asheville where you have easy access to I-40 east & west, I-240 around Asheville, and Hwy 74. School age children are in the Reynolds District and will attend Oakley Elementary School, Reynolds Middle School and highly sought after Reynolds High School. Our home is within a short walking distance (less than a mile) to the Oakley Elementary School, South Asheville Library, Oakley Recreation Center, and the Oakley Park. Next to the ball fields and tennis courts you will find an Asheville Police substation. Motivated for a longer walk? You can trek to the local Walmart, Kohl’s or Home Depot stores. The Oakley community is also on the city bus route with bus stops on Fairview Road. You will also find several churches throughout the Oakley community, several within walking distance.
We are just a short drive to Mission-St. Joseph’s Hospital Systems on Biltmore Avenue. There are also several professional medical parks nearby: Medical Park off of Exit 51, Vanderbilt Medical Park off Exit 50, and MAHEC Family and OB Practices also off Exit 50.
We shop several different locations for groceries which include Bi-Lo, Ingles, Aldi’s, Walmart, Greenlife, Fresh Market, and soon to open Whole Foods across from the Asheville Mall. The Asheville Farmers Market is within a 10 minute drive down I-40 West, and several areas have smaller farmers markets including downtown Asheville, UNC-Asheville and even one in the Oakley Community.
There are plenty of shopping opportunities just five minutes away at Biltmore Village just outside the entrance to the Biltmore House. Check out the River Arts District nearby where you will find local artists and restaurants. Take a stroll downtown to find many local shops and do visit the Mast General Store, Grove Arcade, and Malaprop’s Bookstore & Café. At the Asheville Mall you will find all your major department stores, and soon to come H&M. Walmart, Target, The Kitchen Place and Dicks Sporting Goods are also nearby. Home Depot will be in your back door and Lowes Home Improvement store is within 3 miles.
Some of our favorite restaurants in the area are Cheddars, Juicy Lucy, 12 Bones, Tupelo Honey Café, Acropolis, Mellow Mushroom, Pack’s Tavern, Pappas & Beer, Frankie Bones, The Moose Café, Osaka, Asiana, and Yao. For fine dining you may prefer Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse, Deerpark Restaurant at the Biltmore Estates, or try the restaurants at the Grove Park Inn and Grand Bohemian Hotel. Drive a short distance away from Asheville to Bellagio in Weaverville, and south to Arden in Biltmore Park where you will find Hickory Tavern, P.F. Chang’s, 131 Main, Brixx’s Pizza, Travinia Italian Kitchen and more, afterwards take in a movie at the Regal Cinemas.
Are you into fitness and sports? For individual one-on-one workouts check out Plank Fitness Personal Training on London Road near the Biltmore Village (www.plandavl.com I can personally recommend this group). Check out www.riverridgehealthandwellness where you will find businesses such as Ladies Workout Express Asheville, Bikram Hot Yoga Asheville, Asheville Dance, Cardio Kids Fitness, HF Training Center, etc. The local Asheville Municipal Golf Course is at the end of Fairview Road less than 2 miles away. We love to visit Carrier Park and the French Broad River Park & Dog Park to take walks around the paths next to the French Broad River. Watch or participate in a baseball game, volley ball, lawn bowling, or ride your bike around the old Amboy Road Race Track. There are great children’s playgrounds and areas for picnics and cookouts by the river. A Blue Ridge Parkway entrance is five minutes from the house where you can take a leisurely sightseeing ride, or hike and bike along the parkway.
When looking for entertainment, options are plenty. Take in local festivals in downtown Asheville and surrounding areas of Black Mountain, Hendersonville, and Brevard. Catch concerts and plays at the US Cellular Center, Diane Wortham Theatre, Asheville Community Theatre, The Orange Peel, or enjoy Shindig on the Green during the summer months in downtown Asheville. You will also find local entertainers on the street corners downtown Asheville as you walk around or check out the LaZomm Bus Tours
Our home is just two miles from the entrance of the beautiful historic Biltmore Estate House and Winery. You might be tempted to purchase season tickets to visit the grounds and house during different times of the year. Beautiful at Christmas, flowering gardens in the Spring, and check out the Summer Concert Series list of entertainers. The historic Grove Park Inn is within ten minutes where you can have dinner on the Sunset Terrace, play a round of golf, or enjoy the entertainment at Elaine’s Dueling Piano Bar
Short trips we take from our location include: the Chimney Rock and Lake Lure area, Grandfather Mountain and Linville Falls, Cherokee, and the Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge area. The Asheville Regional Airport is about 11 miles from our location for those vacation getaways.
