"Seller Says"

Black Mountain is the perfect place to live.  It is beautiful, quaint and so convenient!  We have the benefit of being close to Asheville (10 minutes away) but yet the peace of living outside the city without all the traffic! We love to eat date night at Thai Basil, great spicy food!  The boys love to eat burgers and ribs at Phil's Bar-B-Que and Put-Put Golf.  As a family, we like to eat at the Gluten friendly Fresh Pizza! The Artisan makes a great lunch that is healthy and fast and the Morning Glory cafe is a romantic breakfast spot! We love the brand new Ingles grocery store they just built in Black Mountain!  It is the Flagship store and has a gas station, Starbucks coffee and Lawn & Garden Center!  There is a Bi-Lo across the street and also a Gourmet Grocery store located inside The Village.

The Asheville area is wonderful because it is the perfect balance of city mixed with nature.  We have 4 even seasons that are all relatively mild.  There are a ton of mom & pop shops while at the same time all the big box stores that you would want.  Asheville is very diverse and friendly and filled with Arts and Culture! A few other things that I can mention are that we are only a few miles away from Bill Grahams home in Montreat, the Biltmore House, and the Grove Park Inn.  We never run out of things to do or ideas of where to visit. If you are an outdoor enthusiast, there is endless hiking, biking, fishing, and kayaking all within minutes of The Village.

The Village of Cheshire is a wonderful place to visit and has a fantastic coffee and wine bar as well as a gourmet market.  We love to cook, so we get fresh meat and seafood here, once a week, and make ourselves a gourmet dinner at a fraction of the price.  There are weekly wine tastings that are a excellent way to meet the neighbors.  Also, there is a medical building across the creek that has a family doctor, dentist, physical therapist and chiropractor!

We are very active and have children in sports year round.  There are great facilities all around us to train, including an indoor soccer arena right here in Black Mountain.  Just one mile down the road is The Cheshire Fitness facility where we can lift weights, swim, take classes and play racquetball.  We are avid boaters so we visit Lake James all summer long which is only 35 minutes away!

We were attracted to Cheshire development because it's only 1/2 mile from the interstate. It has city water and sewer and ALL underground utilities including DSL and natural gas. It is the only TND (Traditional Neighborhood Development) in the area. The architecture is english craftsman and the village is adorable!  The parks, creek, restaurants and wine shop are in one neighborhood make this an amazing place to live. The views from our development are fantastic. !!!

We were attracted to The Settings development because it was only 1.5 miles from the interstate.  It has city water and sewer and ALL underground utilities including DSL and natural gas.  There is a fabulous Clubhouse for parties and meetings that is at the end of our street.  The views from our development are fantastic.

People come here from all over the world to visit and move!"

We love this house for so many reasons.  It was the first house in the development and set the standard for quality and detail.  It is a Healthy Built Home so it really helps us with our allergies, and having all hand scraped wood floors is magnificent.  We really enjoy sitting around the stone fireplace and having family time or cranking up the wood stove when it is frigid out.  This house is perfect for entertaining.  It has landscape lighting and a house sound system.  It is wired for a back-up generator and has an awesome workshop space in the garage!

Our neighborhood is great for living in a beautiful gated community but also having space from our neighbors.  There is a cute fishing pond at the entrance and great hiking trails all around us.  If you have children, or grandchildren, there is a fantastic Beanstalk playground in the development.

This home is Energy Star AND Healthy Built certified so we have an incredibly efficient home.  The insulation is spray foam so the attic spaces are acclimatized for storage and save a ton of energy.  On top of already having an incredibly energy efficient house, because it is Energy Star certified, the owner gets a 5% discount from both Progress Energy and PSNC Gas for the life of the home.  This discount is transferrable from owner to owner!

I fell in love with Black Mountain 10 years ago when my daughters attended college both in Asheville and in Swannanoa.  One attended the University of NC at Asheville and the other Warren Wilson College. There were many memorable trips visiting them and we always loved stopping off in Black Mountain, visiting this small town and enjoying both the ambiance and great food!

Our favorite stop was the Dripolator where we always indulged in their delicious lattes.  My husband likes the Golf Course and Lake Tomahawk in Black Mountain, just a short distance from our home.  Walking around the lake is always a pleasure and great exercise, and we always enjoy when the baby ducks have arrived at the lake each spring.  We have attended so many festivals in Black Mountain as well, and the Lake Eden Festival is always one of our favorites, featuring amazing music and art. The Sourwood Honey Festival is another one of our favorites featuring all kinds of local crafts and of course honey!  Antiquing is one of my pastimes and there are some great stores in Black Mountain that have been there for years.

Black Mountain has some pretty outstanding restaurants - My Father's Pizza is a great place to eat and another pizza cafe has just opened  - Fresh Wood Fired Pizza & Pasta.  Right downtown is the Veranda Cafe which features everything made from scratch, delicious!  Enjoying a latte is fun either at the Dripolator right in town or a few blocks from our house is the Dynamite Coffee Company where they also roast their own beans.

Out Route 9 is the Morning Glory Cafe, a great place for breakfast or lunch, and next door is a deli where you can get all the fresh meat and cheese, bread and fixings to take home. You can also get  soup, coffee, sandwiches, etc.   Grocery stores that we like would be Ingles which is brand new and also has a place to rent movies. They have a huge variety also of organic and gluten free products.  We also like the small natural food store in town.
The first time we drove up to our mountain house I was immediately drawn to the beautiful property surrounding the home.  And once we were on the deck which wraps all around the house, the view took our breath away.  We have a mountain view all around with complete privacy.  Once we entered the house, we knew we were interested as it was like entering a lodge rather than a home.  With high ceilings, huge windows all around with views of the mountains and the loft, wood stove and great room, it was everything we wanted in a mountain home. We also liked the possibility of building on the lot, as with over an acre there can be 3 additional building lots.  We liked the idea of putting cabins adjacent to our main house.  We added an herb garden, flower garden, rhododendrons, azaleas, pyracantha, 2 birch trees as well as an oak tree when we landscaped the property.  I always enjoy the drive up the road, especially when the Rose of Sharon are in bloom both up the driveway and in the front of the house. We feel our home is a true gem at the top of a mountaintop yet right in town.

Black Mountain is a very special place, not only because of its beautiful downtown but also just the area that surrounds it. You feel as though you are immersed in the mountain life, with the mountains surrounding you.  With close proximity to Asheville and a short drive to Lake Lure, we always felt we had the best of both worlds in this very special town.

Black Mountain is just down the road from Warren Wilson College which is in Swannanoa, the next town over.  We originally purchased our home when our daughter went to school there and it was just a 10 minute drive for her to get to school.  Our other daughter went to the University of Asheville which is just 16 miles away so we had the perfect place to be in.

We will remember the many breakfasts we had on our deck overlooking the mountains as well as dinners on the back deck.  Bathing in our oversized victorian tub is truly a spa experience.  Listening to the blue jays and watching hawks fly overhead, or the wind whistling through the trees, looking out our front window and seeing the fog surrounding the mountains in the early morning, enjoying the first snowfall of the season while the fire is crackling in the wood stove, watching movies in our den downstairs on a cold and chilly evening with a big bowl of popcorn will forever be in our memories!

I love antiquing and flea markets, which abound in this area.  Gardening is also my passion and I love the property for its remarkable soil and the way things grow here.  Music is another venue which we enjoy and there is plenty of that both in Black Mountain and Asheville.  I always take time to read  books when at the house - there is a great used bookstore right in downtown Black Mountain and also a wonderful bookstore, Malaprops, in Asheville.  Weaverville is full of fun as well as Waynesville, all near to us.  We just enjoyed a trip to Chimney Rock, right down the road and enjoyed the beautiful Fall colors as well as apple orchards.  This past summer we went to an amazing Estate Sale in Little Switzerland up the Blue Ridge mountains.  There is so much here to enjoy!

Because this is our vacation home, we don't have as much a chance to visit with our neighbors.   We love walking to the Town of Black Mountain and have sidewalks all the way into town.  We also walk to Lake Tomahawk from our house.

Because our home has been mainly a vacation home, our costs may be a little off but I know that the previous owners used 2-3 cords of wood all season with a backup of the propane (hot water radiant heat). We have been very satisfied with this type of heat and because we have thermostats in 4 areas, (loft, front room, back hallway & downstairs) we can control which areas we wanted to heat.  We own the 500 gallon propane tank which is buried under the front of the driveway and have only had to use about 200 gallons each year.  We love using the wood stove as well.  Our electric bill is through Progress Energy and has run around $30-40/month.  Our water and sewer bill through the Town of Black Mountain is just around $20/month.

The things I love about Black Mountain are too numerous to list, however, here's my top 3"...

1)The mix of people...we're a cosmopolitan city all dressed up like a little mountain village when you get to know who lives here, where they've been, what they've accomplished...but there's no pretense.  Everyone socializes with everyone.

2) We're a completely self-sufficient town, and Asheville is just down the road a bit, on the rare occasion that you can't find what your looking for here.

3) The beauty of our town...it just doesn't get more charming than Black Mountain when you combine the people, the mountains, the architecture of the town...it's the perfect place to live.  I'm a seventh generation Mississippian and I want to be buried right here."

We LOVE to eat at The Morning Glory Cafe...Sunday brunch is amazing.  My children absolutely love to walk down and have breakfast and lunch...and my wife and I enjoy strolling down for dinner in the evenings.    We have a lot of options for grocery shopping.

My family shops Black Mountain Farmer's Market, Black Mountain Health Food Store, our weekend Tailgate Market, and (when we need a larger experience) at Bi-Lo because it's small and very manageable.  When we need a bigger store, Ingles flagship store is literally right around the corner from our house.

We bought the very first lot in Cheshire before there was even a road into the village.  We knew that "the corner lot in the park and right on the creek" would not be for sale very long, so we bought it as soon as we laid eyes on it.

We love Black Mountain because of the eclectic population, the arts and music scene, the food scene (bad restaurants can't survive...and my wife is a Culinary Institute of America alum), and the relaxed way of life.

Asheville is consistently named one of the best places to live...and Black Mountain is Asheville's best-kept secret!

(See map of schools above) As parents of school-age children, Black Mountain is ideal.  We have a wonderful public school, several charter schools, montessori, and a number of private schools.  The educational options are tremendous for such a small town.  We love our home.  We designed it ourselves and planned on living here forever.  We love the open floor plan that makes entertaining a breeze while the eye picks up the traditional and old-world details that make people think this house has been here for a century.

We love to just walk around downtown Black Mountain and the Village of Cheshire and visit with our neighbors.  It's impossible to be in a bad mood because we're constantly running into friends who make us smile.

There's so much to do here...we garden in the Cheshire Community Garden, we hike and jog on our trails and nearby mountains, we play tennis at The Cheshire Racquet Club, we workout at The Cheshire Fitness Center (the cleanest, nicest, and least intimidating gym in Western North Carolina), and we sit on our front porches and back patios with friends for conversation.

Our neighborhood is amazing!  We have Porch Parties, we have gatherings in one of the parks...often with live music, we all jog or walk for exercise together, we play tennis at our racquet club, we swim and workout together at our fitness center, we all walk to the mailboxes together, we watch out for each other...my children can get on their bikes and ride all around Cheshire Village and I don't have to worry...if I can't see them, I know that our neighbors can.  We're all like one big family.

Cheshire Village homes are a higher level of standard than many others - for example, most trim throughout the neighborhood inside the home is POPLAR - this is many times more expensive than Pine trim, and is much better  quality wood to work with. You won't find a hollow core door in Cheshire, doors here are solid wood. Windows are all wood framed, mainly with metal trim on the outside to provide longevity. All stone on the exteriors is REAL - no cultured stone here. All finish on the exterior is also the 'real thing' - no Hardie plank or vinyl siding here as it is not permitted by the building guidelines.

Black Mountain is a wonderful place to be whether you live there year round as I do, or come to a vacation home! Friendly people, beautiful scenery....

It offers the friendliness and fun of living in a small town and everything being so convenient but being close to Asheville also! Great restaurants are here: Que Sera, river-flanked Ole Guacamole, Thai Basil, Fresh Pizza, and the flagship Ingles is 1/2 mile away. You can't beat the wine-tasting at the Merry Wine Market.

The floor plan is open and great for entertaining. There is a counter bar that is open to the kitchen, which is wonderful for serving. There's a large outdoor living area with outdoor fireplace, screen porch and summer kitchen all with beautiful mountain views! Gorgeous lot during all seasons and one of the most private in Village of Cheshire. It has beautiful custom draperies and window treatments.

The previous owner purchased 1/3 of the lot next door to enlarge the lot and for more privacy. This also gave more space for her to plant 400 tulip bulbs from Holland in the yard, which was featured in the 'Art in Bloom tour.'
